| Singapore Singapore scares me as a country. I am against the death penalty and any form of corporal punishment for that matter. So it was just not a comfy place for me to hang out. The idea that a simple act of vandalism (such as writing your name on a public bus) can get you the cane (yes they use this medieval form of punishment) just scares me, what sick minds must these lawmakers have... and by the way, even though they have these crazy laws about selling chewing gum (10.000 S$ fine) or littering (150 S$ fine) or not flushing a public toilet (200 S$ fine, and yes they DO have sensors that automatically lock the door if you try to leave without flushing)and the law mentioned above, the city does not seem to look cleaner, more decent or have cleaner toilets than elsewhere. Anyway besides my political opinion on the dictatorship that still rules Singapore, I must say that the people there are not unkind, they are nothing like the thai, but they usually help you to find your way, and some are even very friendly. At the guesthouse where I was staying (looks a bit sleazy, but they have clean sheets and aircon) the Ah Chew Hotel on 496 north bridge road... the receptionist was very very nice, they let me checkin early and kept my bag in a safe place while I went to Kuala Lumpur by train, which is a great connection by the way (buy a one-way ticket as tickets in Singapore are much much more expensive than in malaysia). Make sure you visit chinatown, some malls aroung orchard road and the HUGE Suntec mall (the biggest I have ever seen in my life, and I am a shopper), Tanjong Pagar road with the buddhist temple on it, Sentosa the leisure island with the most southern point of the asian continent, st. johns cathedral, the Raffles hotel and if you like IT and PC stuff the Funan mall. |
